Yakima Bears News Release
KEIZER, OR - The Bears ran out of comebacks, and the Volcanoes supplied one of their own, defeating Yakima 6-4 in the series finale of this five game set.
The Bears grabbed the lead in the first inning, as Edwin Roman led off against John Odom with a double, and was later bounced home by Cyle Hankerd.
But the Volcanoes got the run right back in the bottom of the first, as Emmanuel Burriss led off against Eddie Romero with a double, and was singled home by Ryan Rohlinger.
The score remained tied at one in the third inning, when Cyle Hankerd delivered his third homerun of the season. Belting a John Odom offering over the left field wall for a 3-1 Bears lead.
Salem-Keizer responded with a run in the fourth off of Romero, but the Bears quickly got their lead back to two with a run in the fifth. That run scored as Jo Jo Batten led off with a triple and was brought in on a groundout by Edwin Roman.
That would be the end of the offense for the Bears, but the Volcanoes saved a little firepower for the latter stages.
With Reid Mahon on in relief in the sixth, Volcanoes manager Steve Decker went to the bench for a left handed batter, selecting Matt Weston. With a runner aboard, Weston connected, crushing a Mahon offering over the centerfield fence to tie the game at four.
In the eighth, S-K won it. The Volcanoes collected three straight singles off of Brooks Brown, the last of which won the game off the bat of Brad Boyer. For insurance, a sacrifice fly made the score 6-4.
Brown (0-2) took the loss, while the timing of the rally made a winner out of Buster Lussier (3-1). Juan Trinidad threw a scoreless ninth for his league best 12th save of the season.
The Bears now travel to the Tri-Cities for three with the Dust Devils beginning tomorrow night at 7:15.
