Bears hit with 4-2 loss

NEWARK, NJ - June 13, 2006 - The Newark Bears were defeated by the Somerset Patriots in front of 4,691 fans 4-2 Tuesday evening at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. Patriots third baseman Jeff Nettles delivered the big hit, a two-run double to left center in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Somerset the lead.

Newark began the scoring in the bottom of the second inning when centerfielder Al Benjamin scored on an RBI single by designated hitter Alexis Hernandez. After Patriots centerfielder Mike Lockwood tied the game at one with his fifth home run of the season in the top of the fourth inning, Bears right fielder Jose Herrera hit his first home run of the season to left field in the bottom of the fourth to give the Bears the 2-1 lead.

Benjamin led the Bears offense on the day going 3-for-4 with two doubles, one RBI, and one run scored, while Lockwood finished 2-for-3 with a double, home run, walk, two runs scored, and an RBI.

Bears reliever Enny Pacheco (0-1) took the loss allowing two runs on two hits in 1 2/3 innings, while Patriots reliever Mike Johnson (1-1) earned the victory after pitching 2 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing two hits, while striking out three. Bears starter David Shepard threw 6 1/3 innings, giving up two runs on six hits, while striking out six.

The Bears and Patriots continue the five-game series Wednesday evening at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium with a doubleheader beginning at 6:05 pm. Hatuey Mendoza (0-1) will take the mound for the Bears in game one against Jeff Urban (1-0) who will make the start for the Patriots.
