Bears Fall in First Half Finale
The Yakima Bears finished the first half of the Northwest League season with a 9-3 loss to the Tri-City Dust Devils at Yakima County Stadium. The loss leaves the Bears with a 13-25 record at the end of the first half.
The Bears took the initial lead with three runs in the second inning. After David Narodowski scored on a fielder's choice groundball by Kerry Jenkins, Danny Pulfer hit a two-run home run. The Bears would not score again and would not even get another hit.
Tri-City starter Ricardo Ferrer tossed three shutout innings after the rough second inning and he would get the win, his first of the season. The Dust Devils tied the game with a three-run third inning and then took the lead with three more runs in the sixth after Ferrer had left the game. Rhett Ballard and Nelson Gonzalez each pitched a pair of no-hit shutout innings to finish the game.
Bears starter Adam Kudryk was tagged with the three runs in the third inning, but only one of those was an earned run. Kudryk exited the game with two outs and the bases loaded in the sixth. Reliever Greg Robinson gave up a bases-clearing double that put the Dust Devils in front for good and put the loss on Kudryk. Robinson would be charged with the two runs in the eighth inning and Drew Zizinia allowed a run in one and a third innings, as the Dust Devils scored nine runs on the night.
The Bears were outhit 13-5 in the loss and no player for Yakima had a multi-hit game. Zach Jones 14-game hit streak was snapped, but he reached on a walk to move his on-base streak to 23 straight games.
After losses in the first two games of the series for the Bears, the team has already lost the three-game series against the Dust Devils. In the first game of the second half, the Bears and Dust Devils play the final game of this three-game set at 7:05 Tuesday. The pitching match-up at Yakima County Stadium is expected to be right-handed pitchers Alex Capual of Yakima and Tyler Gagnon of Tri-City.
