Bears downed by Surf in season finale

NEWARK, NJ - September 24, 2006 - The Newark Bears were defeated by the Atlantic City Surf 11-5 Sunday afternoon at Bernie Robbins Stadium. With the end of the game, the Bears completed their 2006 season.

For the Surf, second baseman Joe Jiannetti went 4-for-5 including his 21st home run of the season, four RBI, and two runs scored, right-fielder Ozzie Timmons and designated hitter Dario Delgado each added two hits, two RBI, and a run scored, and third baseman Raul Marval finished with three hits, two runs scored, and an RBI, as the Surf scored one run in the first inning, five in second, two in the third, and three in the eighth inning.

The Bears scored three runs in the second and two in the fourth led by first baseman Alexis Hernandez's three hits, including a home run, his 11th of the season, two runs scored and three RBI, and a 2-for-4 performance by right-fielder Al Benjamin. Catcher Victor Valencia also went 1-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.

Bears starter Ernie Delgado (0-4) took the loss allowing eight runs, seven earned, on ten hits in three innings, while Charlie Hesseltine (3-2) earned the victory giving up five runs, three earned, on six hits in five innings. Chris Torres threw three scoreless innings allowing only two hits out the Bears bullpen.
