Newark Bears News Release
Tim Raines' Newark Bears defeated the Camden Riversharks 15-9 at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium in downtown Newark, NJ.
Camden took to the offense quickly, collecting two runs in the first inning off a two run single from Garrett Guzman.
The Bears answered after Charlton Jimerson launched a solo home run his first at bat, to put one run on the board. Newark followed with five runs off of four hits in the third inning, highlighted by a Rob Mackoiwak RBI double. The Bears tacked on seven more runs in the sixth, including a two run bomb off the bat of Rob Mackowiak and a three run homer from infielder Victor Mercedes, his first as a Newark Bear.
Victor Santos notched the win for Newark after six innings of work giving up six hits, striking out two, and allowing three runs. Kalen Gearhart took the loss, giving up twelve hits and eight earned runs after five and one-third innings on the mound.
The win capped an exciting day for the Bears; prior to the game the team announced that legendary New York Mets pitcher Dwight "Doc" Gooden was joining the team as Senior Vice President.
The Bears continue their final regularly scheduled series at home this weekend, facing the Riversharks at 7:05pm tomorrow evening. Five dollars of every ten dollar ticket sold for tomorrow's game will be donated to the Port Authority Heroes of September 11 Trauma Center and Emergency Medical Services Center at Jersey City Medical Center, as the Newark Bears honor first responders.
