Bears Acquire Chris Peters from Camden

NEWARK, NJ, June 7-The Newark Bears today acquired left-handed pitcher Chris Peters from the Camden Riversharks in exchange for outfielder Al Benjamin. Peters, who has 136 games of experience at the major league level, will join the team in time for tomorrow's doubleheader against the Long Island Ducks.

Peters, 31, was 1-1 with a 5.68 ERA in 6 games with Camden this season. He pitched in the Detroit Tigers chain in 2002 at double-A Erie, posting a 3-3 record and a 4.73 ERA in 43 games.

Originally a 37th round selection of the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1993 draft, Peters first reached the majors in 1996 with the Pirates. That season he was 2-4 with a 5.63 ERA in 16 games (10 starts). Peters pitched five seasons for the Pirate before pitching for the Montreal Expos in 2001. He owns a lifetime 19-25 record and 4.81 ERA at the major league level.

"Chris is a very important acquisition for us," said Bears general manager Chris Bryan. "He adds big league experience and a talented left arm to our starting rotation. We are very excited have Chris, Jose Lima and Matt Wagner at the front end of our rotation."

Benjamin was batting .242 with 2 home runs and 9 RBI in 24 games played for the Bears this season.
