Edmonton, Alberta -- The number one ranked Alberta Golden Bears, featuring eighteen Western Hockey League graduates including former Medicine Hat Tiger scoring star Ben Thomson, captured the CIS National Hockey title Monday night, defeating the University of Saskatchewan Huskies.
Thomson scored twice including the tying goal in the final minute of period three and the overtime game winner as the Bears overcame a two goal third period deficit to beat U of S 4-3.
The Huskies featured fifteen ex-WHLers including two former members of the Brandon Wheat Kings - goaltender Geoff McIntosh and defenceman Brett Dickie. McIntosh spent three years in Brandon while Dickie was entering his fifth and final campaign when he was traded to Prince George Cougars in October 2003.
By winning the National championship, the Golden Bears captured their record setting 11th CIS title and third under head coach Rob Daum, who has previous coaching experience with both the Lethbridge Hurricanes and Swift Current Broncos of the WHL.
"This is the greatest thing in sports; to win a championship is what everybody plays for and to be able to achieve it, expecially under these circumstances is indescribable," said Daum after the game.
