PORT HURON, MI- The Port Huron Beacons of the United Hockey League (UHL) are happy to announce the signing of Mark Kumpel as the teams new Head Coach.

Kumpel, 43, joins Port Huron after finishing his fifth season with the American Hockey Leagues (AHL), Portland Pirates as an Assistant Coach. The Pirates have been an affiliate with the Washington Capitals of the NHL for their entire 11-year existence and have made the playoffs in nine of those years as an AHL franchise.

During the 1998-99 season, Kumpel served as the Pirates' Head Coach, the third in team history. He came to Portland after two seasons as Head Coach of the East Coast Hockey League's (ECHL) Dayton Bombers. He guided the club to a combined 72-52-16 record (36-26-8 both seasons) and two playoff appearances in that span. Prior to Dayton, he coached two years for the old Nashville Knights of the ECHL, reaching the Riley Cup Finals in his first season.

In 2000 he was the Head Coach of the US under 17 select team, which played in the Four Nations Tournament in the Czech Republic. In 1999 he led the US under 18 select team to a Silver Medal and earlier that year he worked as an Assistant Coach with the United States National Team at the World Hockey Championships.

Kumpel is a native of Wakefield, Massachusetts. Kumpel and his wife, Helene and daughter, Chole live year round in Scarborough, Maine.

Kumpel is slated to begin working August 23rd.
