
BayHawks Hang on to Defeat 87ers

Erie, Pennsylvania, February 5, 2015 - In the second meeting this season between the two teams, the Erie BayHawks (12-18) were able to tie the season series after defeating the Delaware 87ers (11-17) 107-99 as 5,626 fans packed Erie's "School Kids Jam" game. The 87ers were down by as many as 22 points in the second quarter and cut Erie's lead to just four in the final frame, but Erie eventually prevailed down the stretch behind Drew Crawford and Seth Curry's combined 47 points.
The BayHawks started the opening quarter on an 18-5 run as four different Erie starters were able to get on the board. The BayHawks continued their early dominance as Lenzelle Smith, Jr. nailed a three right before the buzzer to pull Erie ahead 33-16, Erie's largest first quarter lead. Kadeem Batts led Erie with 12 points, his best scoring quarter as a BayHawk, but only added three points in the final three quarters.
Seth Curry and Devyn Marble, recent assignee from the Orlando Magic, each knocked down a three on back-to-back possessions to give Erie a 44-22 lead nearly midway through the second frame. The 87ers were able to chip away at the lead to cut their 22-point deficit to 13 after a Maalik Wayns and-one and Jamal Jones three, but Curry and Marble again hit back-to-back threes to halt Delaware's run. Curry's 13 points in the second quarter ultimately gave Erie a 68-48 lead heading into halftime.
Delaware opened up the third quarter on a 6-0 run after two threes. Erie managed to match their intensity in an evenly matched battle where the lead shifted from 14 to 18 for eight straight minutes. Tiny Gallon's two straight field goals eventually pushed Delaware's deficit to just nine heading into the final quarter. Erie was outscored 30-19 in the third.
Victor Rudd's field goal with 6:47 left in the game cut Erie's lead to just six and gave him 21 in the game to lead Delaware. Kenny Hall followed with a slam to make it a four point game until Drew Crawford dropped his third three of the game to get Erie's lead back up to seven. A quick 4-0 Delaware run was halted again by Crawford with a fading hook shot to lead by five with four minutes remaining. Marble's three extended the BayHawks lead back to eight with 2:00 to go as Erie finished off the 87ers 107-99. Erie has won five out of their last seven games after losing eight straight.
Crawford led Erie with 24 points on 8 of 14 shooting and went to the free throw line a season high 10 times. Curry, despite leaving the game with a shoulder injury near the end of the game, finished with 23. Peyton Siva had 13 assists, just two shy of his season high. Marble and Batts each had 15. Rudd for the 87ers scored 24 to lead Delaware in scoring and also recorded 10 rebounds to snag a double-double. Sean Kilpatrick followed with 20 of his own and Tiny Gallon was Delaware's best bench contributor with 12 points on 17 minutes.
The BayHawks travel to Fort Wayne to take on the Mad Ants for the fourth time this season. Fort Wayne leads the season series 2-1. The following weekend is All-Star weekend where Erie's Seth Curry will represent the BayHawks after being selected to participate the NBA Development League's Eastern Conference Future's roster. Erie's next home game is February 18 vs. the Westchester Knicks.
