Mobile BayBears News Release
HUNTSVILLE, AL -- The Mobile BayBears (36-24) picked up a 4-2 win over the Huntsville Stars (40-21) in eight innings at Joe Davis Stadium Saturday night. The BayBears and Stars finished game one of the series that was suspended in the middle of the fifth inning of a scoreless ball game Friday night. The game was to be played as part of a doubleheader on Friday after it was originally scheduled to be played Thursday night but was postponed due to rain. Game two Saturday night was postponed due to rain just before the start of the second contest.
BayBears RHP Mike Lee started game one of the series on Friday night. Lee allowed just one hit over 4.0 innings, not walking any batters and striking out one before his outing was cut short due to the rain.
Stars RHP Tyler Cravy took the mound in game one Friday. Cravy limited the BayBears to just two hits, walking one batter and striking out five before the game was suspended.
On Saturday, RHP R.J. Hively took to the hill for Mobile when the game resumed where it left off in the bottom of the fifth. Hively worked a scoreless half inning, giving way to the BayBears top half of the sixth where Mobile took a 2-0 lead. Tom Belza singled and Jake Lamb followed with a two-run homer to right. The home run, Lamb's ninth of the season gave the BayBears the lead but the Stars would tie the game in the bottom half of the frame.
With two outs and runners at first and second, Stars first baseman Nick Ramirez hit a two-run double off of BayBears RHP Jake Barrett, tying the game at 2-2. The score would remain even until the top of the eighth inning.
Lamb and Dustin Martin both reached base in the eighth with one-out singles. After Jon Griffin struck out for the second out, Raywilly Gomez stepped in as a pinch-hitter against Stars RHP David Goforth. With two outs and a 3-2 count, Gomez lined a two-run double to right driving in both Lamb and Martin to give Mobile a 4-2 lead. RHP Kaleb Fleck worked a scoreless bottom half of the eighth inning, recording his second save of the season and securing the BayBears' 4-2 victory.
Game two of the doubleheader was scheduled to take place 30 minutes after game one but just before the two teams took the field, the tarp was rolled back out as more bad weather postponed the game, pushing back the contest to be played as part of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon starting at 2:00 PM. With the two teams having only played just one of the five games in the first three days, games four and five of the series are also slated to take place as part of a doubleheader on Monday.
The BayBears will return to Mobile for the final home series before the All-Star Break when they open a five game home stand with the Pensacola Blue Wahoos Wednesday, June 11, at 7:05 PM CT from Hank Aaron Stadium.
