Mobile BayBears News Release

Mobile, Ala. – The Mobile BayBears jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings in their series opener against West Tenn Tuesday night, but the Diamond Jaxx came back in a big way, to defeat the BayBears, 9-6. West Tenn used a four-run fourth inning and a five-run sixth to move to two full games in front of Mobile in the Western Division of the Southern League.

After scoring a single run in the second, the BayBears used the long ball to add three tallies in the third. Vince Faison led off with his second of the season and with Jon Knott on first, Rico Washington hit his third of the year, his second in as many games, to take a 4-0 lead.

West Tenn would tie the game in the top of the fourth off of starter Steve Watkins. The Diamond Jaxx sent eight batters to the plate and collected five hits in the frame, including three straight to begin the inning.

The BayBears regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth as Jon Knott hit his team-leading fifth homerun of the season, a solo blast to left-center.

However, the Diamond Jaxx sent 11 hitters to the plate in the top of the sixth inning scoring five runs as the BayBears used three pitchers in the frame. West Tenn led the contest 9-5.

Mobile tacked a single run on the board as Faison drove in Knott with a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the sixth, but that would be it as West Tenn took the opener, 9-6.

The BayBears (13-17) and Diamond Jaxx (15-15) will play game two of their series Wednesday afternoon, with first pitch slated for 11:35 am. Mobile's RHP Brad Baker (0-2; 6.65) will start on the mound against West Tenn's RHP Mike Nannini (1-1; 4.12).
