PEARL, Miss. - It's been a slow series offensively for both ball clubs, but on Tuesday, the Mississippi Braves did just enough to win both ballgames in a doubleheader, knocking off the BayBears 4-2 and 1-0 at Trustmark Park.
In the opener, John Hester's RBI double in the second gave Cesar Valdez (3-4) a lead to work with, but Valdez surrendered his first home in Double-A to the opposing pitcher as Deunte Heath (4-5) tied the score with a jack to straightaway center.
A fourth-inning rally put the Braves (69-65, 39-25) up for good as Javier Guzman singled home a pair before a Matt Young RBI knock made it 4-1. A run in the sixth pulled the BayBears (58-75, 29-34) within two, but Luis Valdez (S, 28) shut the door in the seventh.
Brooks Brown (6-15) took the ball in the nightcap and walked himself into trouble in the second when Jordan Schafer and Van Pope reached via base on balls. Two batters later, Jose Camarena singled off Rusty Ryal's glove to bring home Schafer.
Despite a couple threats, the BayBears were shut out for the 13th time this season and the fifth with Brown getting the start. Bryan Dumesnil (S, 1) worked a scoreless seventh inning with Yunesky Sanchez flying to center, ending the contest.
The BayBears play their final road game of the season on Wednesday as they battle the Braves at 7:05 p.m. Adam Howard (7-7, 5.08) starts against Kris Medlen (6-8, 3.62). The BayBears return to Hank Aaron Stadium on Thursday to host the Birmingham Barons. Call (251) 479-BEAR for tickets or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
