New Bedford Bay Sox News Release

The Ocean State Waves beat the New Bedford Bay Sox 3-1 in Sunday Nights' pitchers duel at Paul Walsh Field.

The Waves sealed the deal in the top of the 9th ending New Bedford's three-game win streak.

Mike Gerber (Creighton University) and Shaun McGraw (Binghamton) got the inning started with back-to-back base hits to put runners on the corners. Gerber scored on a wild pitch from Bay Sox Adam Fournier (Franklin Pierce). Two batters later, pinch runner Mike Sherburne (Community College of Rhode Island) made it 3-1 when New Bedford's catcher Chris Travers (Roger Williams) threw the ball into center field on a stolen base attempt.

Ocean Sate's starting pitcher James Bessel (Dowling College) only allowed two hits and one run through 5 and 2/3, while New Bedford's bullpen struck out eight keeping the Waves to just one run through eight innings.

The scoring started in the top of the third when a costly balk from Bay Sox Brendan O'Rourke (Franklin Pierce) scored Ocean State's Reed Gamache (Binghamton U) to put the Waves on top 1-0.

New Bedford answered back in the bottom of the sixth.

Curtis Anderson (Bryant) started the inning with a leadoff walk followed by a Lane Richards (Notre Dame) perfectly executed hit and run. Anderson was thrown out when he got caught in a pickle in between third and home. Two batters later, Chris Shaw (Boston College) grounded into a fielder's choice to score Richards and tie the game at one.

The Bay Sox are now 17-22 and play Laconia tomorrow at home.

First pitch is 2 PM at Paul Walsh Field.
