Bay Lights out in 8-3 Victory; 'Hammers Back in Third

GARY, IN - Bear Bay pitched eight great innings and the offense plated eight runs as the Joliet JackHammers (49-44) jumped back in front of the Gary SouthShore RailCats (48-44) for third place with an 8-3 victory Sunday afternoon at U.S. Steel Yard. The JackHammers finished the season 4-2 in Gary and are now 5-5 against the RailCats in 2010.

The 'Hammers blew the game open with four runs in the eighth against Jeff Williams. Jon Nelson collected his 25th home run with a deep shot to left field to start the inning. Freddie Thon walked and Richard Mercado singled to put two on with one away. Chris Colton launched a long blast to center field for a three run homer and an 8-0 lead.

Bay (9-5) didn't need much allowing one run on ten hits in eight innings, tying a season high with nine strikeouts. Gary plated their first and only run against Bay on three consecutive singles in the eighth, highlighted by Tanner Townsend's fourth single of the game.

Joliet scratched out four runs against Brad Halsey (6-7), taking an early 1-0 lead. Josh Flores led off the game with a double off the wall in left and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jonathan Wyatt. Brad Correll then lifted a sacrifice fly to center to put the JackHammers on the board.

Halsey surrendered three more runs before his exit, allowing solo tallies in the fifth, sixth and seventh frames. Flores made it 2-0 with a two out single in the fifth with Thon adding another tally in the sixth on a solo home run to left field. Wyatt plated the fourth run in the seventh on a bases loaded fielder's choice.

Halsey went the first seven, allowing four earned runs on four hits with five strikeouts and four walks.

Gary picked up two runs late in the ninth against Griffin Bailey on RBI groundouts by Mike Massaro and Jay Pecci after the 'Cats loaded the bases with nobody out.

Colton and Flores led the JackHammers with two hits while Colton knocked in a game high three runs. The first five in the Joliet lineup each knocked in a run.

Joliet is off tomorrow and will begin a three game series with Fargo-Moorhead on Tuesday night at Silver Cross Field. Devin Anderson (6-4) will get the starting nod for the JackHammers. First pitch is slated for 6:10 p.m. with a 6:00 p.m. pre-game show on 1340 WJOL.

Loose Gravel - The JackHammers tied the 2004 team for the second most wins in franchise history with 49 - Joliet finished 4-2 in Gary, only their second winning record on the road against the RailCats in franchise history - Kevin Rios saw his 13 game hitting streak come to end, going 0-4
