Baum's Inside the Park Shot Powers Blaze
April 28, 2016 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release
Seven innings of quiet baseball quickly turned into a Bakersfield Blaze onslaught as Jay Baum led an eight-run scoring barrage and the boys from Bako knocked off the Lancaster JetHawks, 9-5, on another cold, windy night in the Antelope Valley.
After coming up one run short the previous night, the Blaze once again looked like a tough loss was on the horizon.
Eddie Campbell got the start and turned in a solid effort. The lefty worked 6.0 innings in difficult conditions, allowing just three runs for another quality start.
But the Blaze offense ran into another strong effort from a JetHawks starting pitcher. After Evan Grills turned in 5.0 no-hit innings on Tuesday, Dean Deetz nearly matched him with 5.0 frames of one-run baseball.
In the 6th, Lancaster held a 3-1 lead, with Bakersfield's only run coming on a Drew Jackson RBI double.
The tables turned abruptly in the 8th. Angel Heredia had just completed 2.0 scoreless innings of relief for Lancaster, who then turned to Yeyfry del Rosario (L, 0-1). Yeyfry struggled.
Bakersfield plated four runs in the 8th inning, scoring once on a Chantz Mack single and three times on Austin Cousin's second homer in as many nights.
Lancaster stole one back in the bottom of the frame, when a throwing error brought the Blaze lead to just 5-4.
Bakersfield would put the contest away in the 9th. Del Rosario was asked to keep going in a decision that continues to confound. Kyle Petty stroked a single to drive in one, and Jay Baum ripped a liner off the base of the centerfield wall - the ball pinged toward rightfield and rolled away from all three outfielders, allowing Baum to circle the bases for a rare inside-the-park homer. The shot drove in three runs, and the Blaze went up 9-4.
Kyle Schepel (W, 2-0) worked the 7th and 8th for the win, and Ryan Horstman pitched the 9th.
The series concludes on Thursday with another 6:35pm start. The Blaze will hand the ball to Andrew Moore in the rubber match. Fans can listen live to Dan Besbris at BakersfieldBlaze.com or via TuneIn Radio.
Thursday's game is game three of a season-long ten game road trip. The Blaze next play at home on May 6th.
