Battlewings fall to Arkansas Twisters

(Little Rock, AR) - The Bossier-Shreveport Battlewings lost the turnover battle and lost a game for the first time in 2007, falling to the Arkansas Twisters 64-50.

Battlewings quarterback Quincy Carter threw two first-half interceptions, and the Wings surrendered two fumbles in the game. Arkansas quarterback Brian Villanueva took advantage of the Bossier-Shreveport miscues, throwing for nine touchdowns. Carter finished the evening 21 of 38 with 273 yards and four touchdowns. He scrambled twice, picking up 23 rushing yards along the way.

The Battlewings fell behind 14-0 after Carter was intercepted in the end zone on his team's first offensive possession. The next time the Wings got the ball, they were forced to kick it away and the Twisters marched 33 yards in six plays for a score and a 14-0 lead. Both Twisters first quarter touchdowns were tallied on scoring passes from Villanueva to Robert Kilow. The Battlewings scored 17 unanswered points to take their first lead of the game, 17-14. Brian Hazelwood kicked a 22-yard field goal in the second quarter for the Wing's first score. It was Hazelwood's 43rd field goal in af2, making him the league's all-time leader in that category. Jamaal Perry caught a 43 yard scoring pass from Carter for the first Battlewings touchdown. The second came on the Twisters' ensuing possession when Marc Bacote picked of a Villanueva pass and returned it 30 yards for the Wings' first lead. The score was tied 17-17 at the half. The Battlewings would lead again, 24-23 following a Jason Schule 3rd quarter touchdown run, but the Twisters would recapture the lead 34-30 and would not trail again. Bossier-Shreveport has lost to Arkansas eight consecutive times dating back to 2002. The teams will play again in Bossier City on July 7.

The Battlewings fall to 5-1 and into a first place tie in the af2 Southwest Division with the Rio Grande Valley Dorados, who are also 5-1. The Dorados' only loss of the season is to the Battlewings. The Battlewings will play will be at home this Friday night for a 7:30 kick-off against the Manchester Wolves.
