Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings News Release

Peoria's Pirates handed the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings a tough 46-38 loss Friday night dropping the Wings to 5-9 on the year. It was the first-ever win for the Pirates over the Battle Wings.

Peoria, sporting the No. 1 defense in the AF2, fell behind 20-6 early in the second quarter, but stormed back for four unanswered touchdowns to take a 32-20 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Battle Wing defense went to work in the second half limiting the visitors from Illinois to only two touchdowns, but the Wings just couldn't get the necessary points on the board for the win. A last ditch effort by quarterback Sherard Poteete to hit Reggie Perkins in the endzone was unsuccessful when the ball was picked off by Pirate defensive back Brand Campbell.

Bo Smith, who just found out he will be playing for the Edmonton Eskimos in the Canadian Football League in three weeks, scored the game's first touchdown on a pass from Poteete from 36 yards out. He swept around the left end for another touchdown run from four yards out in the third quarter to narrow the Pirates' lead to 39-31.

Poteete ended the game with 17 completions in 38 attempts, but threw two costly interceptions. He did manage to throw three touchdowns in the contest.

Shadrick McAfee was the favorite receiver for Poteete bringing in five catches for 43 yards. McAfee, replacing Smith on kickoff returns, brought back seven Pirate kicks for 153 yards, his longest being 47 yards.

Peoria used both Talmage Hill and Andrew Webb at quarterback. Hill fired 10 completions out of 19 attempts and a pair of touchdowns. Webb connected on all three of his passes, two of which went for touchdowns. Neither of the Pirate signal callers were picked off by the Battle Wings.

Kevin Brown set up the Pirates in comfortable field position on his three kickoff returns for a total of 117 yards.

Neither team could reach the 200-yard mark in total offense. The Battle Wings managed to rack up 182 total yards to the Pirates' 156.

Bossier-Shreveport will take next week off and finish their home games in two weeks with the Tennessee Valley Vipers, then wrap up the 2004 campaign in Arkansas the final week of the season.
