
Fire defense heats up late against Wardogs

Louisville, KY â The Louisville Fire (8-5) entered tonight game against the Columbus Wardogs (6-7) with a three game losing streak and struggled early in the game to stop the Wardogs. Columbus soared to a 40 â 28 halftime lead, but the Fire defense would allow just 21 points in the second half and win 63 â 61.
The Wardogs got on the board first with Troy Bergeron catching two touchdown passes from Kyle Rowley to put Columbus up 12-0. After Bergeron's second touchdown reception Fire WR/DB Tony Stallings would respond with a 57 yard kickoff return to the put the Fire with five at 12-7.
The second quarter would start off just like the first with Bergeron again finding the end zone to put the Wardogs ahead 19 â 7. Fire OS James Scott would respond with a 28 yard touchdown pass from Matthew Sauk to close the gap 19 â 14. Bergeron would find the end zone twice more before the half and the Fire would go into halftime trailing 40 â 28.
It took the Fire just 2:00 minutes to get on the board in the second half as Tony Stallings ran the ball in seven yards to cut the Wardogs led to five once again. It would take over nine minutes before the Fire would score the second touchdown of the half on Sauk's nine yard strike to James Scott, which would give the Fire their first led 42-40.
The fourth quarter would start off with James Scott scoring two touchdowns the first a 33 yard reception and the second a 30 yarder to give the Fire a 56-47 led. Demetrius Forney would score on a 39 yard run to give the Fire a 63 â 54 led with just 1:34 left. The Wardogs would score once more, but Wes Wilson's onside kick attempt would go out of bounds with only six seconds left on the clock and the Fire would hold on 63-61.
Back drafts: Fire WR/DB Tony Stallings is back from the jungle once again and earned US Army Ironman of the Game Honors with three receptions for 37 yards, five rushes for 34 yards and a touchdown, five kickoff returns for 138 yards and a touchdown... Columbus OS Troy Bergeron earned Baby Ruth Real Deal Offensive Player of the Game Honors with seven touchdown receptions... Fire DS Jabir Walker was named ADT Defensive Player of the Game and Fire OS James Scott was named game MVP... The Fire's win coupled with a Quad City's 48 â 41 loss to Tennessee Valley put the Fire back in first place in the Midwest Division... The Fire will travel to Hawaii next week to take on the Islanders.
