Brandon, MB. -- It didn't take long for the Brandon Wheat Kings to find out their second round opponent in the Western Hockey League playoffs.
One night after clinching their Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series with a 3-2 overtime victory over the visiting Calgary Hitmen at MTS Centre in Winnipeg, the Wheat Kings learned that they will now face the Edmonton Oil Kings in round two when the Moose Jaw Warriors eliminated the Regina Pats 5-2 in game five of their best of seven series.
In addition to Brandon facing off against Edmonton in a battle of the Kings, it will be Moose Jaw up against the Medicine Hat Tigers in the other Eastern Conference Semi-Final.
The Wheat Kings and Oil Kings will kick off the best f seven series with back to back games next weekend - Friday and Saturday, April 6th and 7th - with games three and four scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, April 10th and 11th at Westman Communications Group Place.
Game five will be played back at Edmonton's Rexall Place on Friday, April 13th in what will be a nationally televised broadcast on Sportsnet. Should a sixth game be necessary, it would be played on Sunday, April 15th in Brandon with the seventh and deciding game scheduled for Wednesday, April 18th in Edmonton.
While Brandon was busy defeating Calgary in one of the Eastern Quarterfinals this past week, the Oil Kings managed to win their first playoff series since rejoining the WHL with a four game sweep of the defending champion Kootenay Ice.
The Wheat Kings, who will return to Westman Place for this series after playing all three of its opening round home games in Winnipeg due to the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair, finished sixth during the regular season with a record of 39-28-1-4 while the Oil Kings led the league with an impressive record of 50-15-3-4 mark, good for a total of 107 points.
With the Fair winding down this weekend in Brandon, the Wheat Kings and Keystone Centre box office have announced that tickets to games three and four next week will go on sale Tuesday morning at all Ticketmaster locations. Fans can also order online at ticketmaster.ca or by calling the box office at 726-3555.
