Walla Walla Sweets News Release
WALLA WALLA, Wa. - The date has been set, and the teams are already busy preparing for the third installment of the Battle of the Badge, presented by Inland Cellular FUEL. On May 31, 2014, in front of a sold out crowd, local law enforcement officers and fire fighters battled it out on the baseball diamond for the second year in a row. The fire fighters proved too much to handle as they defeated law enforcement 10-2 and tied the series at 1-1. Bragging rights are on the line as each team prepares to once again take the field for local charities. The 2015 rubber match game has been scheduled for Saturday, May 30 at 7:05 P.M. at Borleske Stadium.
Over the last two years, local law enforcement, fire fighters, community members, and the Walla Walla Sweets have teamed up to raise $50,000.00 for local non-profit organizations. In 2015, law enforcement will be playing for The Moms' Network, and fire fighters will be playing for the Walla Walla Disabilities Network.
The Moms' Network of Walla Walla is a grassroots organization that provides an opportunity for parents to communicate, receive and exchange valuable community and parenting information, network with each other and be actively involved in the community. Since inception the Moms' Network has advocated for families, provided support for early learning, supported volunteerism, and provided educational opportunities for parents.
"The Moms' Network is honored to be chosen by law enforcement as the charity they will play for in the Battle of the Badge," states Beth Swanson, President of the Moms' Network. "The money raised will go directly to programs that benefit local families. Those programs include parent workshops, and new programs planned for 2015 such as our community dinners, and our new Parent Enrichment Curriculum."
The Walla Walla Valley Disability Network is a new non-profit, and the sponsoring agency for Parent to Parent an organization that provides information and emotional support to parents of individuals with disabilities. Their mission is to improve the quality of life for persons with disabilities and their families through access and support.
"Approximately 450 people in Walla Walla County have developmental disabilities and over half of those individuals are children," stated Cindy Knight. "Recreational opportunities are scarce for children and adults with disabilities with no activities organized through public schools or activity clubs. The Battle of the Badge funds will provide an opportunity for our organization to start programs for peer mentors, as well as establish organized sports and team play for children with disabilities."
Ticket sales will kick off Monday, February 16, and once again home field advantage is on the line. Each department will be out in the community selling tickets to the event, as well as a ticket package that includes an official Battle of the Badge t-shirt. The top-selling team will receive home field advantage, use of the Sweets clubhouse, and bragging rights.
