Battery Travel to Hartford for Saturday Away Match
June 16, 2023 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Charleston Battery News Release
CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston Battery are on the road again for their next match when they take on Hartford Athletic on Sat., June 17. Kickoff at Trinity Health Stadium is set for 7 p.m. ET.
The Battery and the Athletic clash for the second time this season. Back in April, Charleston won in dramatic fashion, 3-2, thanks to Arturo Rodriguez's goal with the virtual last kick of the game at Patriots Point. Augi Williams and Nick Markanich also found the back of the net that night.
Since first meeting in 2019, the Battery lead the series against Hartford, with a 6W-3L-0D record over the Connecticut club. However, since 2021, only the home team has been victorious in each match.
Charleston enter Saturday's contest looking to break out of a three-match winless run to start June. The Battery fell 2-0 on the road to Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC last Saturday, their first road defeat of the season. The match capped off a span of eight days with three games. With a full week of recovery and preparations this time, the Black and Yellow will aim to rebound in Connecticut.
Hartford come into the weekend after taking on Detroit City FC at home on Wednesday, a 1-3 loss. It was a mixed bag for the Athletic. The night started strong for them, with a penalty save followed up by a goal from Antoine Hoppenot tied the game at 1-1 after 25 minutes, but the match fell out of reach when Detroit scored two more goals on both sides of halftime.
Nick Markanich is the player to watch for the Battery. The attacker has worked his way back to the pitch following a knock that sidelined him for a few games and will look to pick up where he left off with his strong start to the season.
Antoine Hoppenot is one to watch for Hartford. The veteran is in his first year with the Connecticut club and is the only player to start all 14 of their league matches so far this season.
Should AJ Paterson feature in Saturday's match, he will officially eclipse the century mark for club appearances with Charleston. The skipper currently has 99 Battery matches played to his name.
Speaking of century marks, Aidan Apodaca is nearing 100 career matches played in the USL Championship regular season. He has made 99 appearances in the regular season.
Goalkeeper Trey Muse will look to add to his league-leading total of 44 saves (tied, with two others) and six clean sheets (tied, with three others).
It will be a return to old stomping grounds for Derek Dodson as the current Battery defender returns to where he called home in the 2021 season.
Charleston will be without Augi Williams and Leland Archer, who are off on international duty with the Sierra Leone national team and the Trinidad and Tobago national team, respectively.
