Rio Grande Valley FC Toros News Release
EDINBURG, Texas - Rio Grande Valley FC (2-5-6) is set to meet Western Conference foe New Mexico United (4-6-2) on Saturday, June 17 at 8:00 p.m. CST. The action will take place at Isotopes Park.
Rio Grande Valley FC suffered a late-stage comeback draw at the hands of New Mexico United at H-E-B Park on Cinco de Mayo, they now look to ruin the home fiesta for New Mexico United as their second meeting takes place on the road.
The Texas side is coming off a key home draw which went down to the wire against Miami FC at H-E-B Park, where Wahab Ackwei corrected a defensive mistake which cost them a goal and the lead by striking gold in the 97th minute himself and putting away a goal to save the draw and a much needed point to stay in shape in the conference standings.
The theme remains the same, no more silly goals given up and be effective offensively. This mentality has been drilled by Wilmer Cabrera weekly and the veteran coach shared his displeasure in the post-match press conference on June 10. After a silly penalty was given up at just 2-minutes into the match, Cabrera noted that he could not have his veteran pieces giving up such silly mistakes which gave life to opponents on the pitch.
Wilmer Andres Cabrera earned a goal of the week title after he sent a well-placed shot from outside the box, a highlight to the efforts of RGV FC recently who have adjusted to taking shots and risks outside the box to increase their offensive threat presence.
Overall, if Rio Grande are able to play a match with limited miscues and are productive on a shorter, nontraditional pitch, they should be able to manage three important points on the road before completing a quick turnaround to take on Colorado Springs at H-E-B Park on Wednesday June 21.
