Charleston Battery News Release
CHARLESTON - The Charleston Battery will match all donations to the Mother Emanuel Hope Fund collected Saturday night during the game versus Harrisburg, club president Andrew Bell said Wednesday.
"Soccer fans in Charlotte, Richmond, Louisville and Washington stood in support of Charleston last weekend, and as the soccer club that represents the city we felt it was important to contribute in some way at our next home match," Bell said.
Nine members of Emanuel AME Church in Charleston were murdered on Wednesday, June 17.
The team will take up a collection in the stands of Blackbaud Stadium during Saturday's match. After the tally, the club will match the amount and send a check to the Mother Emanuel Hope Fund, a non-tax-deductible account administered by the City of Charleston. After payment for funeral and burial expenses, the balance of the fund will be administered by the leadership of Emanuel AME.
More than $370,000 has already been contributed to the Hope Fund.
In remembrance of the tragedy, the stadium will observe a pre-match moment of silence, and Battery players will wear black armbands during the match. The team's supporters have indicated they are planning their own observances.
