Charleston Battery News Release

The Charleston Battery lost to the Virginia Beach Mariners by a score of two goals to none tonight at the Sportsplex in front of 1,253. Former MLS striker Dante Washington scored both Mariners goals.

The loss dropped the Battery to a record of 2-7-4, 10 points, eighth position in the Eastern Conference. Virginia Beach improves to 4-6-2, 14 points good for seventh place in the East.

The first chance of the game fell to Charleston in the 4th minute. The Battery won a free-kick just outside the box on the right side. Defender Ivan McKinley lined up a shot but his left-footed effort cannoned back off the Mariners wall.

In the 6th minute Virginia Beach came close as forward Dante Washington swept a ball through the middle to his strike partner Carlos Garcia. Garcia carried the ball into the penalty-area but his shot was well saved by a diving Dusty Hudock.

Charleston enjoyed long spells of possession throughout the first period and in the 18th minute midfielder Justin Evans found room to shoot from twenty-five yards out. His right-footed attempt forced Mariners goalkeeper Matt Nelson to scramble across the goal but in the end the shot curled wide of the target.

Battery Midfielder Nick Downing created a half-chance for Charleston in the 31st minute. He received the ball wide on the left and drove a diagonal pass to the back of the six-yard box. Midfielder Aleksey Korol met the cross but his header was saved by Nelson moving to his right.

Late in the first-half the Mariners' Carlos Garcia found some space midway inside the Battery half. He took a step forward, controlled the ball then fired a long-range shot at the goal that lifted just over the bar.

Virginia Beach broke the deadlock in the 60th minute. Dante Washington received the ball in space at the edge of the penalty area. He took a neat first touch then lashed the ball into the bottom right-hand corner of the goal past a diving Hudock.

Two minutes later the Mariners doubled their advantage with a second Washington strike. Carlos Garcia made a surging run to the goal line before cutting the ball back sharply to Washington. Again Washington had time to steady himself before firing a low shot into the goal.

Charleston returns home Saturday night to take on the Western Conference Seattle Sounders at Blackbaud Stadium; kick off is set for 7:30 PM.
