Charleston Battery News Release
Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery takes on its USL First Division rival the Atlanta Silverbacks Saturday night (May 26) at Blackbaud Stadium; kick off is set for 7:30 PM ($8 - $15, 971-GOAL). The two teams have squared off 34 times, playing each other more in the last 10 years than any other team. Saturday's match is the first of four this year, the Silverbacks return for a game on June 22 while the Battery visits Atlanta July 4 and August 4.
The Battery (1-2-2) fell to the expansion Railhawks in the Battery's first away game of the season last weekend. Carolina's Kupono Low scored from the penalty spot in the 39th minute for the game's only goal.
Atlanta (3-2-2) split a pair of games last weekend, winning at Puerto Rico 3-2 before losing in Miami 2-1 two days later. Daniel Antoniuk leads the team in scoring with three goals.
It's been nearly two years since the Battery had its last win over the Atlanta Silverbacks, a 2-1 decision at Blackbaud Stadium on May 28, 2005. Overall the Battery has a slight edge in the series, with a 17-13-4 record against Atlanta. However over the last few years that edge has grown dull. Since August 8, 2003, the Battery has only managed one win over the Silverbacks. Other than the 2005 win, the two teams have drawn three times. The rest have been Battery losses.
The Battery squad received a boost this week with the return of forwards Ian Fuller and Jordan Hughes. Fuller and Hughes have struggled with injuries during the early part of the season but resumed full training this week and should be available for selection Saturday night.
