
Battery readies for Austin Aztex

Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery takes on the Austin Aztex this Thursday night at Blackbaud Stadium; gates open at 6:30 PM with kick off set for 7:30 PM ($10 - $18, 971-GOAL / www.charlestonbattery.com). The Battery (9-3-8, 35 points enters the game in a tie for first position in the USL First Division standings, Austin (3-9-7, 16 points) comes into the game in 9th place.
Charleston defeated the Carolina RailHawks 2-1 last Friday night in its last USL1 match behind goals from veteran defender Matt Bobo and rookie forward Tom Heinemann. Heinemann's game-winning header was his first goal for the Battery in his rookie professional season.
Charleston Battery head coach Mike Anhaeuser should have veteran goalkeeper Dusty Hudock back available for selection Thursday after Hudock missed last Friday's match through suspension. Hudock has conceded just four goals in 2009 in USL1 and leads the league in shutouts (11) and GAA (0.25).
The Austin Aztex tied the Montreal Impact in its last league match played last Saturday night at Nelson Field in Austin, TX. Austin had a two goal advantage but conceded twice in the last ten minutes as Montreal earned a point. The Aztex last win was on July 3 versus the Cleveland City Stars in a game played in Cleveland.
Austin's attack is led by English forward Eddie Johnson who has scored four goals and added three assists in seventeen games played.
This is the third and final game of the regular season between the two Clubs; the Battery defeated Austin 2-0 on June 5; Darren Spicer and Matt Bobo scored the goals. The teams played to a 1-1 tie in the second match of the series; both previous games were played in Austin.
Austin is led by head coach Adrian Heath who played in Europe for 18 years beginning his career with his hometown club, Stoke City, before moving onto play for Everton, Espanyol, Aston Villa and Manchester City. With Everton, Heath won two League Championships, the F.A. Cup and the European Cup Winners Cup in a six-year span.
Heath has coached and been an assistant coach for more than 12 years; previous Clubs include Sheffield United, Burnley and Coventry City.
