Battery Open USL PRO Season at Richmond Kickers
April 11, 2013 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Charleston Battery News Release
Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery will open their 2013 campaign this Saturday, April 13 at 7:00pm against the Richmond Kickers at City Stadium in Richmond, Virginia. The two clubs have been competing against one another since 1993 and have created a great rivalry over the years.
Over the past 46 meetings, the two sides are all knotted up with 21 wins each and four draws. With those statistics it should come as no surprise that in their two meetings last season the teams split wins with the Battery taking the first game and the Kickers claiming the second.
In addition to a rich history of quality soccer matches, over the years the two clubs have constantly featured personnel acquired from the opposition. This season, the Kickers will have ex-Battery keeper Andrew Dykstra between the pipes and ex-Battery defender, Luke Vercollone holding down the backline.
Coach Leigh Cowlishaw is the man in charge for the Kickers; he has taken them to the postseason 12 of the last 13 years, won the USL crown twice and is a USL Hall of Fame member.
Richmond Kickers - The Players to Watch
David Bulow (#10): Bulow is an experienced veteran who is always a threat to score. Bulow has spent time in the MLS, and has made huge strides in the USL he will definitely be a player to watch this season and an important mark for the opposition's defense.
William Yomby (#2): There is always something to be feared when a defender has the ability to score goals as well. William Yomby, a Cameroon native provides just that for the Kickers backfield. Yomby contributed four goals last year to notch 8 points and was a 2009 Defender of the Year and a 2010 finalist.
Stanley Nyazamba (#99): The Zimbabwe native has been productive at the midfield position for the Kickers and last year recorded three goals and two assists. In addition, he is the first ever Zimbabwe native to record a goal in USL PRO play. Look for Nyazamba to add a dual threat for the Kickers at the midfield position as he can set up scoring opportunities for others or put it away himself.
