Battery midfielder Osvaldo Alonso named as finalist for USL1 Rookie of the Year

Charleston, SC. Charleston Battery midfielder Osvaldo Alonso has been named as a finalist for the USL First Division Rookie of the Year honor. Alsonso had a superb first season with the Battery and on Tuesday was named to the USL First Division All-League First Team.

Alonso cemented his role in the Battery's starting line-up after impressive performances during the pre-season Carolina Challenge Cup. In addition to his six goals he also converted penalties in the U.S. Open Cup penalty shoot-out wins versus the Houston Dynamo (Third Round) and the Seattle Sounders (Semifinal).

Alonso defected from the Cuban national team last July during the 2007 Gold Cup; a native of San Cristóbal, Cuba, Alonso is the former captain of the Cuban Olympic team; he was capped 17 times for the full national team and scored 2 goals.

Twelve individuals representing eight clubs are up for the end of season USL1 honors as voted on by the league's coaches and general managers. The winners of the marquee awards will be announced at the USL First Division Championship banquet.
