Charleston Battery News Release
Charleston, SC - The Charleston Battery lost to the Richmond Kickers tonight in OT by a score of two goals to one in front of a crowd of 3,683 at Blackbaud Stadium. The loss drops the Battery to a record of 3-15-4, 13 points and last place in the Eastern Conference. Richmond improves to 14-7-3, 45 points and remains in second position in the Conference.
Richmond had the first chance of the match in the 15th minute. Forward Kevin Jeffrey sent a looping cross in to midfielder David Hayes on the left side of the box. Hayes hit a first-time shot that sliced wide of the target.
Charleston broke through with the first goal of the game a minute before half-time. Midfielder Gabe Valencia nutmegged Clyde Simms to break to the goal-line on the left-hand side. He whipped a cross into the middle towards forward Ted Chronopoulos. Chronopoulos met the cross and volleyed home for his second goal of the season.
Richmond tied the game in the 63rd minute. Hayes sent a corner-kick in from the right side to the back of the six-yard box. Defender Matt Bob jumped and snapped a header past Battery goalkeeper Dusty Hudock and into the goal.
Charleston looked to have taken the lead again in the 83rd minute but substitute forward, Caleb Norkus' goal was called back by the assistant-referee's offside flag. Norkus had been put through at the edge of the area and beat Richmond goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale with a powerful shot, but the goal did not stand.
In the first period of OT Battery goalkeeper Dusty Hudock made a good save to deny substitute forward, Rob Ukrop. Ukrop hit a hard right-footed shot on-target that Hudock managed to parry around the post for a corner.
Richmond scored the winning goal in the 103rd minute. The Battery failed to fully clear a Kickers corner-kick. The ball dropped to defender Kevin Knight just inside the eighteen-yard box and he lashed a half-volley through a crowd of players into the right-hand corner of the goal.
Next up for Charleston is a Sunday evening match versus the Rochester Raging Rhinos; kick off is set for 6:05 PM (Newsradio 730 WSC / www.charlestonbattery.com).
