Charleston Battery News Release
Charleston SC. The Charleston Battery (4-0-1) heads to the Sportsplex, Virginia Beach Saturday night to take on it's A-League Southeast Division rival the Virginia Beach Mariners (3-1); kick off is set for 7:30 pm (WTMZ 910 AM / www.charlestonbattery.com). The match doubles as an US Open Cup qualifier and is the second leg of a two-match home-and-home series; Charleston won the first game 3-1 at Blackbaud Stadium on May 3rd.
Charleston Battery Head Coach, Chris Ramsey,
"This is a very important game for the Club, we are fortunate to have two-goal cushion but we must ensure that we do not take this as a guaranteed entry into the next round. Virginia Beach have shown recently that they have a lot of fire-power and are going to be a force to be reckoned with this season."
The Battery's 3-1 win over the Mariners on May 3rd came via two goals from Josh Henderson and one from Chris Bagley. Charleston held a 3-0 lead through 90 minutes of regulation but conceded a late goal in stoppage time.
US Open Cup qualification is decided on aggregate score so Charleston will advance if it wins, ties, or loses by less than two goals. If the Mariners defeat the Battery by more than two goals they will advance; if they win by a two-goal margin, qualification will be decided by FIFA penalty kicks.
Charleston enters the game leading the Southeast Division with four wins and a tie good for 13 points. The Mariners are second with three wins and one loss, 9 points. Last Friday night Virginia Beach defeated the Rochester Raging Rhinos 3-0 in a game played at the Sportsplex, Virginia Beach.
Three Named to Team of the Week
Three Battery players were named to the A-League Team of the Week following last weekends two-match series with the Charlotte Eagles. Defender Fred Degand was honored for his solid defensive play in the 1-0 road-win Friday night. Midfielder, Ted Chronopoulos was also named for his game-winning goal in Friday's game. Rookie midfielder, Chris Goos was honored for his goal and assist in the 2-2 tie played Saturday night at Blackbaud Stadium.
