Charleston Battery News Release

Charleston, SC - The Charleston Battery takes on Major League Soccer's Columbus Crew Wednesday night at Blackbaud Stadium (7:30 PM) in the Battery's second game of the 2004 Carolina Challenge Cup. The Carolina Challenge Cup is a four-team round-robin tournament that also features Major League Soccer's DC United and the current PSL Champion Wilmington Hammerheads. DC United plays Wilmington Wednesday night in Wilmington NC in the other game.

In Saturday's action DC United defeated the Charleston Battery by a score of two goals to one. Freddy Adu opened the scoring for DC with his first professional goal. Bobby Convey scored the match-winner from a set-piece after Charleston's Paul Conway had leveled the scores.

The Columbus Crew beat the Wilmington Hammerheads 2-0 in their first game of the tournament with goals from Chad Marshall and Frankie Hejduk.

This will be the second meeting between the Battery and the Crew. In 1999 Charleston lost 3-0 to Columbus in the semifinal of the US Open Cup.

Columbus has made some significant roster moves since failing to make the playoffs in 2003 with the recent additions of Simon Elliott (LA Galaxy), Manny Lagos (San Jose Earthquakes) and Robin Fraser (Colorado Rapids).

The Crew used the MLS 2004 SuperDraft to bolster its defense, selecting U20 National Team defender Chad Marshall and 2004 Hermann award winner, Chris Wingert.

In addition to its four new signings the Crew roster includes US National Team players, Frankie Hejduk, Brian Maisonneuve, Kyle Martino & Jeff Cunningham.

The 2004 Carolina Challenge Cup finishes this Saturday with a doubleheader at Blackbaud Stadium that sees Charleston play the PSL Champion Wilmington Hammerheads (6:00 PM) while DC United plays the Columbus Crew (8:15 PM).
