Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery defeated the Vancouver Whitecaps 1-0 Sunday evening at Blackbaud Stadium in front of 3,283. Gavin Glinton scored his fifth of the year to lift Charleston to victory; the Battery improve to 4-3-4, 15 points, good for 7th position in the USL First Division.

Charleston started brightly and came close to scoring in the 2nd minute. Midfielder Ugo Okoye broke a tackle in the center of the pitch then hit a hard low shot towards the goal that just skipped past the left post.

In the 23rd minute midfielder Omar Daley latched onto an errant back-header from defender Geordie Lyall. Daley fired at the goal but his attempt sailed just high.

Vancouver's only shot of the first half came in the 24th minute as the ball was worked forward to Stefan Leslie. Leslie drove a low shot at the goal but the ball flew wide of the target.

The Battery finally broke the deadlock in the 54th minute. Daley cut to his markers left on the right side of the field then slipped a square pass across the middle to Glinton. Glinton controlled the ball then fired a shot at the goal that was blocked back to him by goalkeeper Josh Wicks. Glinton lunged at the loose ball and stroked it past Wicks and into the back of the goal.

Vancouver enjoyed the best of it for the last half hour and forced Battery goalkeeper Dusty Hudock to make several saves. Hudock tipped a Joey Gjertsen shot over the bar in the 62nd minute then minutes later saved brilliantly as Diaz Kambers shot from distance.

Substitute forward Dave Morris had two attempts late in the game but Hudock was equal to them both as he preserved the clean-sheet and recorded his 4th shut-out of the season.
