Atlanta, GA. The Charleston Battery lost to the Atlanta Silverbacks by a score of two goals to one Friday night at Atlanta Silverbacks Stadium. Despite enjoying a man advantage for the last fifteen-minutes after Atlanta forward Ansu Toure was sent-off, the Battery could not find the tying goal.

Charleston started well and came close in the 7th minute from a corner-kick set-piece. Osvaldo Alsonso played the ball to the back-post but midfielder Ian Fuller's header flashed wide.

Atlanta opened the scoring in the 12th minute after the Battery bundled striker Jerson Monteiro over in the box. Midfielder Macoumba Kandji converted the ensuing penalty-kick slotting the ball to the right of Dusty Hudock.

Charleston replied less than a minute later after earning a free-kick on the right side, just outside the penalty-area. Winger Stephen Armstrong took the free-kick and curled the ball into the goal with a dipping left-footed strike.

The Silverbacks scored the game-winner in the 37th minute after a good run down the left by Monteiro. Monteiro played the ball across to Toure who slammed it past Hudock into the right side of the goal.

The Battery players appealed for a penalty-kick of their own just before the break but the referee ruled that the contact inside the box was incidental.

After the break Charleston pushed forward had a chance to equalize in the 67th minute after midfielder Chris Williams was tugged down in the box. The referee awarded the penalty but Alsonso saw his right-footed attempt saved by Atlanta goalkeeper Felipe Quintero who pushed the ball round the right-post.

Atlanta were reduced to ten men in the 73rd minute after Toure clattered into Armstrong after the ball had been played. The referee showed the red card and with a man advantage Charleston attempted to press the issue.

Randi Patterson had two chances in the late going but saw a right-footed shot saved in the 80th minute then in the 87th minute he snapped a sharp header just wide of the far-post.

The Battery returns to Blackbaud Stadium this Sunday for a 6 PM match versus the Vancouver Whitecaps ($8 - $15, 971-4625 / www.charlestonbattery.com).
