Newark Bears News Release

Newark, NJ –Friday, July 26, 2002 – The Newark Bears defeated the Bridgeport Bluefish by a score of 6-3 to extend their current winning streak to six games, their longest such streak of the season. Byron Batson (5-5) picked up his third consecutive win as he allowed just two hits and one run through eight innings while striking out six.

It was the top two batters in the Newark line-up that provided the Bears with enough offense this evening off of Bryan Wolff (3-5). Both Joe Mathis in the lead-off spot and Jack Joffrion behind him had two hits, a homerun and three runs batted in.

Joffrion got things going in the first as he hit his eighth homerun of the season, seventh since joining the Bears, a two run shot that gave Newark a 2-0 lead. Wolff again got in trouble in the third with Wil Quintana and Jack Rexrode on base, as Mathis blasted his 12th homerun of the season giving Newark a 5-0 lead. Newark extended to a 6-0 lead with a solo run in the fifth.

Wolff departed for Bridgeport after going 6.0 innings and allowing six runs, only two earned, on six hits and a walk. Terry Rosenkranz pitched the final two innings and held Newark hitless the rest of the way. Brendan Kingman hit his fourth homerun of the season, a solo shot in the sixth, to break-up Batson's attempt at a shutout.

With the win, Batson improved to 5-5 and moved to 3-0 in the month of July and has put his last loss more than four weeks behind him. Jeff Tabaka relieved him in the ninth and allowed two runs on two hits to bring the final score to 6-3.

The Newark Bears will begin a three game series with the Long Island Ducks tomorrow evening at 6:05 and will finish the game with a magnificent Fireworks display courtesy of Warnock Automotive Group. Tickets for that game and the rest of the 2002 Second Half are on sale now by calling 973.483.6900 or through any Ticketmaster outlet in the tri-state area. Come Play In Our Yard. NewarkBears.com
