Louisville Bats News Release
Louisville, KY -The Bats were scorching hot tonight as the team recorded a franchise-record 24 hits in the 19-3 thumping over the Durham Bulls. The win evens the best-of-five series at one game a peace. The entire squad was rolling as everybody in the Louisville starting lineup got a hit and scored a run. The sixth and eight innings were the only innings the Bats did not score.
A night after the Bats went scoreless and only produced six hits, they opened the game on fire and equaled Wednesday nights' hit totaled in the first inning alone. Drew Stubbs singled in the Bats' first run and Kevin Barker drove in two more runs with a single RBI to right. Shaun Cumberland then singled in the last run of the inning, making it 4-0 in favor of Louisville.
The Bats would tack on another run in the second inning on another Barker RBI single to right field.
Louisville continued their assault on the Bulls with a monstrous third inning, which saw the Big Purple Machine bring 12 batters to the plate. Paul Janish and Craig Tatum each homered in the inning to lead the onslaught, as the Bats took a two-touchdown lead.
The nine runs in a single inning are the most that the Bats have produced this season.
With the game well in hand the Bats were looking to answer Bulls with a shutout of their own. The chances for the shutout vanished in the eighth inning, when Bats reliever Josh Roenicke gave up a two-run homer to Jon Weber, putting the Bulls on the board.
After losing his last five outings, Bats starter Homer Bailey (1-0, 0.00) was nearly flawless tonight while recording his first victory since April 30th. The 22-year-old right-hander dialed up eight strikeouts, walked one and gave up only two hits in six innings of work.
Mitch Talbot (0-1, 31.50) picked up the loss for Durham and lasted only two innings. He gave up nine hits, sevens runs, walked one and struck out five.
The Bats and Bulls will head to Durham to play the third contest of a best of five-game-series Friday evening. First pitch is scheduled tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. Louisville lefty Adam Pettyjohn (15-6, 4.59) will get the start and be opposed by RHP Jeff Niemann (13-9, 3.86).
