Bats Come Alive, Roadrunners Take Game One
LAREDO, Texas---The Edinburg Roadrunners bashed out 20 hits against the Laredo Broncos en route to a 14-5 victory Tuesday night at Veterans Field.
With the win, Edinburg leads the best-of-three series 1-0.
The Roadrunners (1-0) got the scoring started in the first inning against Matt Gibbs (0-1).
Wilmer Pino led off with a double then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Felix Molina. Nelson Teilon then hit a ground ball allowing Pino to score making it 1-0 Edinburg.
Ambiorix Concepcion started the top of the second with a walk and then Alexis Hernandez followed with a two-run home run to deep left field giving the Roadrunners the 3-0 lead.
The Broncos (0-1) got on the board against Jose Pablo Oyervidez (1-0) in the bottom of the second after Salvador Paniagua hit a solo home run to lead off the inning cutting Edinburg's lead 3-1.
In the top of the third, the Roadrunners added to their lead.
Three straight singles loaded the bases for Concepcion who followed with a two-run single to left field that knocked Gibbs out of the game.
One out later, Osiel Flores hit a two-run triple to right center field allowing Wilson Batista and Concepcion to score.
Robert Matlock capped off the scoring with an RBI single that allowed Flores to score making it 8-1.
Maiko Loyola gave the Broncos another run with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth off of Oyervidez to make it 8-2 Edinburg.
That would be all the runs Oyervidez would allow after pitching six innings while scattering four hits and striking out eight.
Edinburg added to their lead in the top of the eighth after Molina hit a two-run home run off of reliever Jeff Jamnik making the score 10-2.
In the top of the ninth, Wilson Batista led off with a single to right field and then moved to second after Concepcion followed with a single of his own.
After a single by Alexis Hernandez loaded the bases, Flores then hit a two-run double scoring Batista and Concepcion.
Matlock then hit an RBI single that allowed Hernandez to score from third.
One out later, Molina hit an RBI infield hit allowing Flores to score from third extending the Roadrunners lead 14-2.
Laredo scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth but Mark DiBernardo got the final two outs of the game to give Edinburg the 14-5 victory.
The Roadrunners and Broncos will play game two of this best-of-three series Wednesday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
Wardell Starling (0-0) is expected to face Juan Peralta (0-0) with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
