Visalia Rawhide News Release
The Visalia Oaks and starter Jonathan Barratt defeated the Stockton Ports 6-1 Thursday to force a decisive game three in this best-of-three first round playoff series.
Barratt stifled the Ports offense over seven one run innings, allowing just four hits.
Visalia took the early lead and never looked back. The Oaks scored one run in the first, one in the third and three in the bottom of the fourth to take a commanding 5-0 lead. In the first inning, with two outs and Chris Nowak on first base, John Jaso ripped a double into the gap in right-center field to bring Nowak all the way around from first base and give Visalia a 1-0 lead. In the third, the Oaks scored again with two outs. With Fernando Perez in scoring position after stealing second base, Nowak singled into right field to plate Perez and make it 2-0 Oaks. Visalia took control of the game with a three run fourth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Perez laced a triple down the right field line on an 0-2 slider to clear the bases and extend Visalia's lead to 5-0. Perez finished the night 1-5 with a triple, three RBI, one stolen base and one run scored.
Stockton got on the board with a run in the top of the sixth. With two outs and runners at second and third, Luis Perez singled up the middle to drive in Matt Singleton and make the score 5-1 Visalia.
The Oaks added an insurance run in the seventh when Sergio Pedroza smoked an RBI single up the middle to drive in Nowak. Nowak went 2-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Game three is set for Friday night at 7:05 PM at Recreation Park. With the series tied 1-1, the winner will advance to play the San Jose Giants for the California League North Division Championship. The Oaks will send right-hander Derek Feldkamp, who is 8-6 with a 6.41 ERA, to the mound in game three. Stockton will counter with Michael Madsen, who was 6-11, with a 6.68 ERA in the regular season.
