Barrage Suffer First Loss of 2007 to Long Island Philadelphia suffered a disappointing loss against the Long Island Lizards of 11-16 to fall to a 3-1 overall record.
Uniondale, NY (June 16, 2007) - On a sunny afternoon in Long Island, New York, the Philadelphia Barrage suffered a disappointing loss to the Long Island Lizards in front of 5,103 fans at Mitchel Athletic Field. Lizards' midfielder, Chris Fiore was named Bud Light MVP of the game for his two-goal performance.
Philadelphia got on the board early in the first quarter with a goal from newcomer Seth Goldberg. However, the Lizards came back with a vengeance scoring four straight goals in a row, giving them a three-goal cushion. Philadelphia's Matt Striebel scored his 11th goal of the season cutting the deficit down to two goals. With two minutes left, Barrage attackman Ryan Boyle scored his 11th goal of the season off a Striebel assist to bring his team within one. Goldberg, who has been a shining star of the Barrage team, scored his second goal of the afternoon and tied the game at four. Long Island answered back with a two goal run keeping them ahead. Long pole defenseman, Kyle Sweeney had something to say with a behind the net goal, his fourth goal of the season with 7:37 left in the half. Then Striebel had a great feed up the middle to open attackman, Jed Prossner, who scored his first game of the afternoon, bringing the Barrage once again within one. To close the first half of play with 38 seconds left on the clock, Barrage attackman Michael Springer, tied the game at seven.
After a very physical opening to the third quarter, Long Island jumped ahead by one with a goal from former Barrage player, Keith Cromwell. Another former Barrage player, Nicky Polanco, scored his first goal of the season for the Lizards as a long pole defenseman, giving his team another two-goal lead halfway through the third quarter. Philadelphia was having a tough time against the Lizards at the end of the third quarter, allowing them to score four more unanswered goals, putting them ahead by six. Things did not start off good for the Barrage when Lizards midfielder Stephen Berger scored in the first seven seconds of the fourth quarter. The "barrage" of goals against Philadelphia continued, when Blake Miller of the Lizards scored his third goal of the afternoon giving his team a very comfortable eight-goal lead. Long Island midfielder, Chris Fiore scored his second goal of the afternoon, pushing their lead up to nine. Boyle scored his second goal of the game with four minutes remaining in the second half to finally break a nine-goal scoring streak by the Lizards. With under four minutes left to go in the game, the Barrage suited up back-up goalie, Kevin Keenan to take the place of Brian "Doc" Dougherty, followed by another goal from Boyle, his third of the game. Springer scored his second goal of the game with a minute and a half left in the game, followed by another goal from Boyle. Although the Barrage went on a four-goal run at the end of the fourth, the fell five goals short of winning their fourth straight game. The final score was Philadelphia 11, Long Island 16.
The Barrage will travel to Rochester, NY for a rematch against the Rattlers on Saturday, June 23 at Paetec Park. Face off is set for 7:30 PM. Philadelphia will return home to United Sports Training Center in Downingtown, PA on June 30 to face the Long Island Lizards. Face off is set for 7:00 PM.
