Jacksonville Barracudas News Release
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville Barracudas wrap up Training Camp 2003-04 on Wednesday as they prepare for their WHA2 season opener on Friday night in Alabama against the Slammers.
"I don't know much about Alabama," Barracudas Head Coach Ron Duguay said. "I do know that Gary Unger has coached good teams in the past. He's been a minor league coach for a long time and with Taylor Hall's experience I know we'll be playing against a very good team."
Jacksonville lost an exhibition game to Orlando last Saturday 6-4. The Barracudas gave up 5 of the 6 Seals goals while short-handed. This week Coach Duguay stressed special teams.
"We worked hard this week on puck control. The Orlando game exposed weaknesses on the power play and the penalty kill," Duguay stated. "We also continue to work hard on conditioning."
Goaltender Brandon Snee will get the start for the Barracudas on Friday night. Snee, a 5th round draft pick of the New York Rangers (#143 overall) in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, came to the Barracudas as part of the "hand shake" relationship Duguay has with the New York Rangers.
"Brandon had a good camp and so did Nate (Ziemski). It was a tough decision but I decided to go with Brandon," Duguay explained.
The Barracudas start the WHA2 season with four games on the road before returning home for the Home Opening Weekend Celebration on Friday, November 28th vs. Miami Manatees. Face-off time is 7:05 and the JEDC Sports and Entertainment Council is sponsoring the first sporting event ever in the new Jacksonville Veteran's Memorial Arena. Then on Saturday, November 29th, the Barracudas battle the Macon Trax with a special 12:35pm matinee start.
