Birmingham Barons News Release
BIRMINGHAM, AL â The Birmingham Barons overcame a 4-1 deficit to beat the Mobile BayBears 6-5 on Saturday night in front of 4,724 fans at the Hoover Met. The win coupled with a Huntsville win keeps the Barons tied with the Stars for the top spot in the Western Division at 18-15.
The story for the Barons was not the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders and their on field performances but rather the performance of relief pitcher Kris McWhirter. McWhirter (2-5) tossed four near perfect innings in relief of starter Byeong An who was pulled in the third inning after giving up four runs on six hits. McWhirter allowed just one base runner on a walk and shut down the BayBears offense. His outing allowed the Barons to claw back into the game and earned him the victory.
Mobile took an early lead with a pair of runs in the first inning as Bobby Scales clocked a two-run triple. Birmingham cut the lead to 2-1 when Gabe Alvarez scored on a double-play in the second but the BayBears answered right back with another two spot in the third. Jon Knott and Scales each knocked in a run with RBI singles to make the score 4-1 and chase An from the game. Scales ended the night going 3-for-4 with four RBI.
Down 4-1 going into the fourth the Barons batted around and plated five runs off of Mobile starter Duncan McAdoo (3-7). The five run inning was the biggest offensive outburst for the Barons since they scored five runs in an inning at Jacksonville on June 28th. Jon Hamilton, Josh Shaffer and Danny Sandoval supplied the key hits in the inning. Hamilton singled in a run to start the scoring and was followed up by a Shaffer two-run double and a two-RBI single by Sandoval.
Ryan Meaux came on threw the final 2.2 innings and gave up a run on two hits but pitched well enough to finish the game and pick up his first Double-A save.
The Barons look to sweep the short two-game series as they send out RHP Tetsu Yofu (7-6, 3.42) to face RHP Chris Rojas (5-6, 4.64). All the action can be heard on 101.1 FM "The Source" with Curt Bloom on the play-by-play.
