Birmingham Barons News Release

BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Barons returned to .500 (17-17) and continued to rack up the wins as they defeated the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx by the score of 2-1 in front of 5,156 fans on Saturday evening at the Hoover Met. The win moves the team into a tie for second place with West Tenn, four games behind division leading Huntsville.

The Met has been home sweet home for the Barons this season, as they've won nine straight games at home and sport a 12-4 record overall. The nine-game, home winning-streak ties the longest such streak for the Barons in the last 11 years (1993).

Barons starter Dennis Ulacia (1-4) had his best start of the season as he went six innings and gave up five hits and one run with four strikeouts to pick up his first win. The victory was Ulacia's first since August 6th of the 2002 campaign. His only blemish on the night was a solo homer by Mike Dzurilla.

The Barons offense provided just enough support on the night as first baseman Gabe Alvarez drove in both runs off of D-Jaxx starter Aaron Krawiec (3-3) during his 2-for-3 night at the plate. Alvarez plated the first run in the fourth as he doubled home Scott Bikowski and drove in Ryan Hankins with a single in the sixth.

The bullpen took over in the seventh and blanked West Tenn the rest of the way as Royce Ring picked up his seventh save of the season after striking out the last batter of the game.

The Barons look to keep the winning-streak alive in game two tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 PM. Birmingham will send out RHP Tetsu Yofu (1-1, 0.56) to face West Tennessee's RHP Sergio Mitre (2-2, 4.98). This will be Yofu's first American start.
