Cleveland Barons News Release
The Cleveland Barons celebrated the Thanksgiving weekend by winning all three of their games at the Iceland USA in Strongsville, OH.
Cleveland 5- Youngstown 4 (SO)
On Wednesday night, the Phantoms came out in the first period with an Aaron Rhyner goal at the 1:02 mark which chased Baron goaltender Ian Keserich (Parma, OH) from the game. Matt McBride (Findlay, OH) making his second appearance with the Barons allowed a Mike McMullen goal at the 14:45 mark to give the Phantoms a 2-0 lead until Adam Fincik (Donora, PA) put the Barons on the board at the 19:19 mark with the assist going to Matt Shouneyia ( Bloomfield Hills, MI) bring the Barons with in one goal at 2-1.
The Barons came out with a mission in the second period as Matt Shouneyia scored a power play goal at the 2:05 mark with the assists going to Vinny Jalaba ( Beverley Hills, MI) and Mike Wolff ( Chicago, IL) to tie the match up at two. At the 14:43 mark Barons defenseman Bob Helminen (Calumet, MI) scored on the power play with the assists going to Jalaba and Neal Sheehan ( Avon Lake, OH) giving the Barons a 3-2 lead. Youngstown tied the score at the 16:44 mark with an Aaron Rhyner goal to end the period knotted at three.
The third period featured a goal at 6:33 mark by the Phantoms Jim Roach, but Barons forward Neal Sheehan answered back at the 13:35 mark with the assists going to Shouneyia and Fincik to send the game into overtime.
There were numerous opportunities in the overtime, but no scoring led to shoot out, where Barons starting goalie Ian Keserich was in to turn away all six shots, while Jason Weeks (Seattle, WA) scored on Tyler Sims giving the Barons the victory. Barons goalie Matt McBride had 29 saves in the game.
Cleveland 4- USA under 17 1
The Barons came out flying dominating the game from the start . Barons forward Jason Weeks scored at the 4:05 mark to give Cleveland a 1-0 lead . Jim Fraser scored to tie the score at one after the first.
The Barons came out in the second never to look back, Jason Weeks scored his second of the game at the 8:06 mark with Brian Bicek (Downers Grove, IL) and Bob Helminen getting the assists. Adam Fincik scored at the 19:57 mark with Vinny Jalaba and Matt Shouneyia assisting to give the Barons a 3-1 lead after two.
In the third , Vinny Jalaba scored at the 17:26 mark to wrap it up with assists going to Weeks and Mike Ruberto (Stoney Creek, ONT) . Barons goalie Ian Keserich came back with a strong effort with 28 saves going to 14-6-2.
Cleveland 4 -USA under 17 2
The Barons completed the weekend sweep with a 4-2 victory over the USA under 17 team. Adam Fincik opened the scoring at the 7:27 mark wit the assist going to Neal Sheehan and Jason Weeks. After a Phil Kessel goal , Barons forward Jake Cepis (Parma, OH), called up from the Barons Midget major team scored his second goal of the year with the assist going to Kurt Kivisto (Milford, MI) giving the Barona 2-1 lead. At the 19:12 mark of the first Barons defenseman Trevor Mallon scored his first goal of the year with the assists going to Sheehan and Fincik ending the period with a 3-1 Barons lead.
The only scoring in the second was a Nathan Gerbe power play goal to bring USA back to 3-2 score after two.
In the third, Mike Ruberto sealed the deal with a goal at the 8:58 mark with the assists going to Brian Bicek and Jason Weeks to end the score at 4-2.
Barons goaltender Ian Keserich had 28 saves in the game to improve his mark to 15-6-2.
