Knoxville Smokies News Release

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Tennessee Smokies (42-39, 5-7) dropped both ends of a doubleheader to the Birmingham Barons (38-43, 7-5) Sunday evening at Regions Field. Birmingham rallied for five runs in the bottom of the seventh for a walk-off 8-7 win in game one, and game two was a pitching duel that the Barons edged out 2-1.

In game one, the Smokies jumped out to an early lead on Jake Slaughter's eleventh homer of the season. The Barons responded with runs in each of the first three innings to take a 3-1 lead. The Smokies exploded for a five-run fourth inning, with RBI hits from Delvin Zinn, Yonathan Perlaza and Matt Mervis, but the Barons did not give up, scoring five times in the seventh, capped off by Raudy Reed's two-run, walk-off home run of Danis Correa (L, 1-3).

In game two, the Barons broke through a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning on a Yoelqui Cespedes double that gave them a lead they would never relinquish. The Smokies did not go down without a fight, as Chase Strumpf cut the lead in half with his team leading 14th home run of the season, but ultimately it was not enough.

Smokies starter RHP Walker Powell (L 0-2) was solid in his second start in Double A despite taking the loss. He went four innings, allowed just three hits, one run and struck out three.

The Smokies return home to begin a six-game set with the Biloxi Shuckers Tuesday night at Smokies Stadium. First pitch is set for 7:15 p.m. when the Smokies send RHP Riley Thompson (0-2, 7.91) to the mound against RHP T.J. Shook (2-1, 5.40). Fans can catch the action on 99.1 The Sports Animal or by visiting https://www.milb.com/tennessee/fans/audio-listen-live.

Smokies Stadium will host Throwback and Dollar-Hot-Dog Night on Thursday, July 15 as well as Corona Hard Seltzer Night on July 15. Saturday, July 16 will be Grateful Dead Night featuring a postgame concert by The Stolen Faces. For tickets, call the box office at (865) 286-2300 or visit smokiesbaseball.com.
