Birmingham Barons News Release
Following last night's rain postponement, the final six innings of Wednesday's game needed to be finished as the front-end of a double-header. After three innings of shutout baseball the night before from both sides, Birmingham and Pensacola sent out bullpen arms to eat up the final two-thirds of the game.
Birmingham sent Sam Peralta to the hill and he pitched very well. Across 3 innings, Peralta fanned four batters and only allowed three baserunners. Conversely, Pensacola sent Anthony Maldonado to the hill and struggled out of the gate. Lenyn Sosa stepped up as the second batter Maldonado faced and launched an opposite field solo home run.
Then, in the subsequent inning, Raudy Read roped a double down the left-field line to score speedster D.J. Burt from first. Overall, Maldonado finished with 2 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, and 2 SO. However, the offensive onslought was only beginning.
In the 7th, the Barons poured on two additional runs courtesy of a passed ball and soft liner by Lenyn Sosa. Finally, for the icing on top, a bases loaded RBI walk brought in Birmingham's fifth run of the day. On the flipside, the bullpen day for Birmingham continued with Felix Paulino taking the ball and he did not dissapoint whatsoever.
Paulino ended with a save, despite the Barons' 5-1 victory, because he pitched three full innings to close the door on the Blue Wahoos. His lone fault arrived in the ninth when he surrendered a solo shot to left field. ¬â¹
The scoring started early in the second game. Jose Devers tripled on the first pitch of the game. Ray-Patrick Didder was the next batter and smacked his seventh homer of the year.
In the bottom of the first inning, Birmingham got two sac flys off the bat of Craig Dedelow and Lenyn Sosa to tie the game.
Pensacola's Norel Gonzalez hit his first home run of the year in the third inning to plate three runs and give the Blue Wahoos a 5-2 lead. But Ian Dawkins responded for the Barons in the fifth inning with his second long ball of the season to bring in two more runs. Raudy Read's RBI single in the sixth tied the game.
In the seventh, and final inning, Declan Cronin allowed a three-run homer to Troy Johnston, which solidified the final 8-5 score.
Tomorrow, the Barons send out Scott Blewett (3-2, 4.37). The Blue Wahoos will start Bryan Mitchell (0-0, 9.00).
