Birmingham Barons News Release
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Birmingham Barons (35-36) picked up their third straight win to open the second half of the season, keeping the Montgomery Biscuits (37-36) out of the win column with a 6-3 victory at Riverwalk Stadium on Saturday.
Moment That Mattered: Trailing 2-1 in the top of the third, Joel Booker belted out his first Double-A homer, a solo-shot over center field to continue his breakout tear following his promotion from Winston-Salem on Thursday, tying the contest at 2-2.
Turning Points: The Birmingham lineup ignited in the top if the sixth, starting with a one-out single from Trey Michalczewski. Danny Mendick followed it up with a double before Jameson Fisher broke the tie, plating both base runners with a triple for a 4-2 Barons lead. Fisher would touch home on a passed ball, extending the lead to 5-2 in favor of the Magic City.
Facts and Figures: Colton Turner (W, 5-1) pitched lights out over 2.1 innings of relief, allowing just a pair of hits while fanning four. After a mounting Montgomery rally in the eighth saw the Birmingham lead slip to 5-3, Jose Ruiz came in and ended the threat before closing the door in the ninth for his fifth save.
By the Numbers: Through his first three games as a member of the Barons' lineup, Booker has "slowed" to 8-for-14 with a home run, two doubles and an RBI along with a stolen base and five runs scored. Fisher, Mendick, and Keon Barnum each tallied two hits on the night, while Fisher's two RBI paced Birmingham at the plate. Michalczewski added some insurance with a sacrifice fly in the ninth, marking his 14th RBI in 12 games against the Biscuits.
Up Next: The Barons look to clinch the six-game series in game four on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 5:05 p.m. Birmingham newcomer Bernardo Flores (0-0, 0.00), will toe the rubber against fellow southpaw Genesis Cabrera (5-4, 4.01) for Montgomery. Curt Bloom will have the call on 960 WERC News Radio and the iHeart Radio app.
