Barons Win Their Eighth Straight Contest

BIRMINGHAM, AL- The Birmingham Barons continued their winning ways as they swept a series-opening doubleheader from the Carolina Mudcats by the scores of 1-0 and 5-4 on Monday evening at the Hoover Met in front of 1,808 fans. The Mudcats came into the series with the best overall record in the Southern League before falling twice to the red hot Barons.

In game one, Kris Honel (5-6) turned in one of his most impressive outings of the season. After beginning the season 1-4 in his first 11 starts, Honel has gone 3-1 in his last four starts including his solid outing on Monday night. Against Carolina, Honel tossed six shutout innings and struck out a season-high nine batters while giving up just two hits and three walks. Corwin Malone started the seventh and walked the leadoff batter before Dwayne Pollok came on to close out the game and notch his seventh save of the season.

The lone run for the Barons came in the bottom of the fourth inning off of starter and eventual loser Luke Lockwood (2-6). With two outs, Ryan Sweeney walked and then moved all the way to third on an error by Lockwood who threw a pickoff attempt into the Barons bullpen. With the third baseman playing back, Chris Stewart laid down a perfect bunt single down the third base line that allowed Sweeney to jog home.

In the second game, Birmingham was down 3-0 and 4-2 before they posted a come from behind victory to finish off the sweep. Josh Fields launched a two-run bomb in the fourth inning to get the Barons on the board before Birmingham plated three unearned runs in the fifth on a three base error by centerfielder Reggie Abercrombie and a wild pitch. B.J. LaMura (4-2) picked up the win in relief and Paulino Reynoso worked around a hit and two walks to record his eighth save of the season.

Game three of the series tomorrow night will feature RHP Sean Tracey (12-5, 4.35) for the Barons versus LHP Adam Bostick (4-1, 2.73). Game time is set for 7:00 PM.
