Birmingham Barons News Release

The Birmingham Barons dropped their series finale with the Mississippi Braves 9-6 Tuesday in front of 1,752 fans at Regions Park.

In a back-and-fourth affair that featured five lead changes and three ties, the Barons committed two crucial errors in a four-run eighth inning that turned a 5-5 tie into a 9-5 deficit.

After a leadoff single by Keenan Wiley, back-to-back sacrifice bunts by Barrett Kleinknecht and Mycal Jones led to throwing errors at first base, scoring a run both times. Andrelton Simmons followed later with an RBI single and Matt Kennelly drew a bases loaded walk to give the Braves a 9-5 lead. All four runs in the inning were unearned.

Barons starter Matt Zaleski allowed three runs on eight hits in 6.0 innings while taking a no-decision. Brandon Kloess (0-2, 4.66) picked up the loss, allowing five runs (two earned) on two hits while allowing two walks in an inning of work.

The win went to Andrew Russell (2-0, 0.00) who tossed 2.0 shutout innings while striking out three.

The Barons drew a season-high 13 walks, which also set a Braves franchise-high for walks allowed. Damaso Espino and Justin Greene each collected two hits with Espino raising his team-leading average to .362.

With the loss, the Barons fall to 9-11 on the season. After an off-day on Wednesday, the Barons hit the road to play the Biscuits in Montgomery. The two teams will play a double-header on Thursday with game one starting at 10:35 PM CT.
