Friday night, September 26th, the Cleveland Barons opened a new chapter in their team history, playing their first game at the IceLand USA complex in Strongsville, Ohio against in state rival the Toledo IceDiggers.
The Barons jumped out to a quick two goal lead on Friday night. Mike Ruberto (Stoney Creek, ONT) led the charge with his first career hat trick in the NAHL.He also chipped in with an assist in the match. The Barons held a 2-0 lead going into the third period when they scored three more times. Also scoring for the home team was captain Nick Biondo (Parma, OH) and a shorthanded goal by John Goebel ( Parma, OH). Defenseman Matt Ruberto (Stoney Creek, ONT) and forward Neal Sheehan (Avon Lake, OH) chipped in with a pair of assists. Also getting helpers in the game were Adam Fincik (Donora, PA) and Vinny Jalaba (Bevrley Hills, MI). Goaltender Ian Keserich (Parma, OH) had 25 savesin the match.
The second of the series featured the offensive power of the Barons, with the hometeam scoring three times in the first two periods to build a 6-1 lead. The Barons were led by their defensemen tonight with Bob Helminen (Calumet, MI) scoring twice and getting an assist and Matt Ruberto getting four helpers. Vinny Jalaba had two goals , center Brian Bicek ( Downers Grove, IL) had a goal and two helpers. John Goebel, Mike Ruberto and Jac Tomasello (Parma, OH) had assists. Goaltender Ian Keserich had 18 saves in getting his third victory of the season.
BARON NOTES: The Barons go on the road this weekend against in state rival Dayton Gems at the Hobart arena. Both games, on Friday and Saturday will start at 8PM.
