Hoover, AL - The Mississippi Braves knocked on the door of a huge inning all night, but two big Barons innings plus stranded runners were a losing formula for the M-Braves, falling 7-2 to the Birmingham Barons on a cold Monday night at Regions Park.

Starter David Hale pitched a 1-2-3 first inning with two strikeouts, but Corey Smith led off the second with a hit, setting off four straight singles leading to three runs for the Barons (9-10).

In the Birmingham sixth, it was Smith again leading off with a single. Seth Loman doubled for his third hit of the night, scoring Smith from first. Loman came around on an RBI single by Kenny Williams Jr., and another run scored on a Tyler Saladino single. Four runs came in during the frame, and the Braves trailed 7-1. Hale got two outs in the sixth before giving way to Richard Sullivan in relief.

Meanwhile, Mississippi (7-12) had a base runner on in every inning except the sixth, including runners in scoring position in seven innings on the night. They stranded 12 runners total, including the bases loaded in the eighth inning.

Barrett Kleinknecht scored twice on the night for the Braves, doubling to lead off the fifth and scoring on Phil Gosselin's two-out single to make it 3-1 Barons. After Birmingham scored their four in the sixth, Kleinknecht walked to lead off the seventh, scoring on Andrelton Simmons' two-out double to make it 7-2.

Hale suffered his second loss of the season, allowing seven runs on nine hits over 5 2/3 innings. Sullivan had a strong night in relief, pitching a scoreless 2 1/3 innings and striking out three.

Cameron Bayne picked up his second win for Birmingham. He allowed a run on six hits over six innings. Santos Rodriguez and Nevin Griffith combined to allow a run over the final two innings.

Mississippi and Birmingham each vie for the series victory on Tuesday night at 7:05 PM CT from Regions Park. The Braves send left-hander Chris Masters (0-1, 4.40) against Barons right-hander Matt Zaleski (0-1, 3.60). Listen live beginning at 6:30 PM on 103.9 WYAB and online at MississippiBraves.com.
