Lancaster Stormers News Release

Most nights, if Lancaster pitching surrenders only three runs, it is a 'Stormers rout.

Saturday night was an exception.

Five Long Island pitchers combined to limit the hot hitting Barnstormers to six singles as the Ducks defeated Lancaster, 3-1, in the middle game of a three-game series.

The contest was shortened to seven innings following a 35-minute rain delay before the first pitch.

The game featured a matchup of Long Island pitching coach Darin Downs against Lancaster reliever Yoel Espinal.

Downs, who made 21 starts for the Ducks in 2019 with a 2.63 ERA, was activated for the start and worked the first three innings. Espinal went deeper into the game, working five innings to help out his overworked bullpen mates.

Lancaster struck first. With one out in the second inning, Alejandro De Aza and Blake Allemand stroked consecutive singles. LeDarious Clark grounded into a force play, leaving Lancaster with runners at the corners. Clark stole second, and, when Sal Giardina fired through, De Aza headed home with the run.

The Ducks quickly responded. A single by Ryan Jackson was followed by walks to Rey Fuentes and Giardina to load the bases. A passed ball led to the first run, and Jesse Berardi's grounder to short brought home Fuentes for a 2-1 lead.

Consecutive singles by Jackson, Fuentes and Giardina in the fifth produced the final tally against Espinal (1-2).

Lancaster threatened against Brady Dragmire (1-0) in the fifth on singles by Anthony Peroni and Melvin Mercedes. Left-hander Hunter Cervenka was summoned to face Blake Gailen and retired him on a line drive to left.

Michael Tonkin retired the side in order in the seventh for his third save.
